Curse of the Designer

It was an interesting concept brought up in a deign class a few semesters back.  After having seen, read, and learned about the different aspects of design and applied it to various projects.  One is now “cursed” to look at any piece of advertisement differently.  Driving down the highway, a billboard just isn’t a piece to read to pass the time.  It’s now become a piece to critique in the short 30 seconds you have before moving on to the next one.  Movie posters fall under the scrutinizing eye, same with flyers, websites, newspaper ads, etc.

They can’t be looked at for great deals, bargains or a bit of information.  They are now taken apart piece by piece in our minds, and it’s not even a conscious decision.  It just happens.  Why did they choose this color?  Why this placement?  Why that font?  Who’s their target market?  Do they even know who their target market is?  What the hell were they thinking?

It’s an intersting concept.  Unable to look at a design like your average person, and what’s worse is you can’t explain why it works or doesn’t.  Least you want to be looked upon like you’ve lost your marbles.  Still, it’s makes road trips, movie outings and even reading the newspaper that much more interesting.

My Plan

Not really a big all consuming plan.  But, none the less, any website that I may build from this point forward, I will do my best to make it CSS layout driven and hopefully I’ll master the art of div tags, span tags, and heirarchy so search engines like any and all sites I build.  It’s has been written on the web, and therefore it has been written in digital stone. (unless for some reason I hit the edit button and chance what I said.)

You know it’s pretty bad when…

You know it’s pretty bad when you dream about making some minor changes to your website.  Then when you go to the page after you’ve actually woken up and are once again part of the real world and the changes aren’t there and you are left confused.  Yes.  I dreamt about editing HTML.

There is something wrong with me.

I still need to put a little more work into the site.  I think I may have made the images for the roll over links a little big on the file size.  Will adjust them when I can access my external hard drive (mac <->  pc compatible external hard, please make this. thank you.)  For now, I’m PC bound (not that it is a problem), it’s just I was making most of the my stuff on a mac, saved most of it to an external hard drive and now that I’m not using school computers for the moment, I’m up the creek without a paddle so to say.

Unless of course, there’s a REALLY nice person out there that’d like to donate a shiny, new, pretty mac with the latest adobe creative suite installed on it to me.  I can dream can’t I?

In any case, the things I can fix will come soon, like those “extra” links over there to the side.  Yeah, something needs to be done about those.  I’m also certain there’s things missing that I haven’t thought about yet… like a downloadable version of my resumé (nope haven’t thought about that yet.)
